Where should we establish a proper outpost first?
Here are some advantages and disadvantages of each:
THE MOON
Pros
- Closer proximity to Earth (shorter transit time)
- Cheaper
- Good for research into effects of low gravity on humans
- Knowledge and experience from the previous landings
- Can be used for easier launches
Cons
- Lacking in vital resources
- Dangers of extremely abrasive moon dust and cosmic rays on surface
- Not as exciting or prestigious (been there before)
MARS
Pros
- Far richer in resources
- Better potential for self-sufficiency when developed
- More daring/exciting
- Leading to a possible future planet for humanity
Cons
- Expensive
- The cost of mistakes is greatly exacerbated
- More advanced technology needed
- Dust storms

Edited by Recon Number 54: 5/31/2014 5:24:01 PMI would say the Moon, but first with a habitat-station at the L1 Lagrange Point and then with as much of the Lunar installation as possible being automated. The station at L1 could then be used as a "spaceport" for assembly and embarkation of interplanetary trips. Materiel that could be mined/constructed on the Moon would have the ability for a low-g launch to the station and items that could only be made on Earth would stop and hold at L1. If we ever do get to the point where we are capturing comets or asteroids, parking and processing them at L2 would be very efficient. Similarly, before making a permanent settlement on Mars, an orbital station above Mars would be both a safe-harbor in the need to evacuate the planet installation and as a port of entry/departure for Mars. Properly done, the first ship to make a major trip to Mars should have modules capable of shuttling ship components to the Martian surface and materiel/people back to the ship in orbit. The orbiting ship should be modular enough to serve as the initial orbiting installation and later either the core or a section of a larger station as the presence on the surface and traffic to/from Mars increases. These are large-scale undertakings, our efforts to date have been training and learning how to make/use large-scale habitats in a vacuum and in orbit. The skills and expertise to make large, modular, and long-lasting environments for this purpose is the only way that we can truly make a permanent presence off of the Earth. Our trips should not be done in single-purpose, as small as needed vehicle just to "plant a flag and then go home". While that appears economically wise on the surface, it is a waste of effort, time and resources. We should think in larger and longer scales and if we are going to become an inter-planetary species, we need to do so in a way that shows how serious we are.

Obviously we need to establish a permanent base on the sun. The North Koreans landed there during the night. However, our technology is much more advanced. Our superior sun block would no doubt allow us to land and walk on the sun unharmed. That'll show those commie bastards.

Mars has cosmic ray issues as well, it lacks a magnetosphere to shield it. Space stations are overall a better idea for now, they can have Earth-like gravity and can be moved around.

WHICHEVER ONE CAN SUPPORT NICER PORCHES.

Why not both? I want spaceships

The moon. That way I can always act out -godwinslaw!- Zombies in real life

Mars. Even though it would be more expense the technology required to get there could make everyone's lives better and easier

We can't go to the moon. Humanity was warned via nasa by alliens never to return to the moon again. Thats why nasa aborted the apollo project after apollo 17 and russia never made any atempts. Everybody know's that. So Mars it is.

Wut abuot all teh Cabal n Hive guyz!?!?1?! Con's: tHE Cabal and more numeress at nite and Hive look lyk my NamNam and she is soooo old its scarey!!!1! #destiney

Mars, it may be further away and cost more but there are more opportunity and the same as on the moon. It it also a much more interesting place there is more to do/see there. Its worth the cost in the long run. However, we must first find a safe way to get there and stay safe there from cosmic radiation
-
We go back to take our second steps on the moon! She will be our launch pad and training ground for the rest of the solar system if possible! And, on the plus side, we could create a new varient of Humans!
-
Well clearly both. The moon as a launching platform for future inter solar missions. Then Mars for mining, and out of system exploration.

Sure, it's abrasive, but it can also be piled atop structures to serve as a radiation shield.

I'd say the moon has the best resources, with large H3 deposits, meaning that nurse power can become cheaper and easier.

Moon It's a progressive step we would have to (or at least should) take before Mars. We should start close to home and naturally expand further out.

Edited by Naru: 5/25/2014 7:45:56 AMMoon is much better. Mars, although being a great step forward, is very risky, and I can't imagine the tragedy that can happen to those people who go colonize it in a decade. We need to take baby steps in space colonization.
-
The Moon is not lacking in resources moran.
-
First? The moon. It's cheaper and the risks are far less severe. It'll help us work out the kinks before trying mars.

*Adjusts tin foil hat* There all ready have them.

Martian resources increase happiness and population income more than lunar resources, so Mars.
