Why are some gamers today still blinded by nostalgia?

Don't get me wrong, the best memories I had of gaming was back when I was a little kid playing the N64. I get how we look back at those happy memories and are fooled into believing it was because games back then was better, but I'm an idiot. I realize that gaming today is MUCH better in nearly every aspect if not, all when it comes to technology, options, and gameplay. I'm not trying to imply (for example) CoD is better than a classic like Ocarina of Time. However there's still people out there that just won't admit it, and I find it SO frustrating when some fans constantly complain how games today suck, and they wish certain series would go back COMPLETELY to the way they were. Why do they think these older games would succeed into today's generation of gaming? WHY DAMMIT? Are they really that blind by nostalgia to use a bit of common sense? EDIT: Didn't realize so many people on bnet still considers the older gaming generation better, but hey, if you care to explain, I'll try and comprehend.

  • Games will always be more fun when you're little, just like life. *Cries* Although, I do miss printing out cheat codes.

  • "better game" is very subjective
I'm not trying to imply (for example) CoD is better than a classic like Ocarina of Time
good, because they are two different games from two different cultures and times, you can't say one is better. apples and oranges.
I realize that gaming today is MUCH better in nearly every aspect if not, all when it comes to technology, options, and gameplay.
better graphics does not mean 'better' games. yes some options have improved and gameplay has evolved but the simplicity of old games are what make them great, just like their music.
I realize that gaming today is MUCH better in nearly every aspect if not, all when it comes to technology, options, and gameplay.
Those are subjective indicators of good quality video games. Many other gamers look at aspects such as storyline, originality, creativity, etc. when it comes to good video games. You don't see much of that( compared to older games like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark) in most of today's video games, in my opinion. I wouldn't see some gamers saying "being blinded by nostalgia" as being wrong, I'd just view them as wanting qualities of older games (that are lacking in many of today's games) to be more present in today's games. I don't think these gamers are lacking in common sense, I think they just have different opinions than you do about video games, which is perfectly fine in my eyes.

The only time I end up putting on my nostalgia goggles is with FF7. But that's only because if they ever ended up remaking it, they'd turn it into a winy shitty Advent Children emo fest. No ebonics, no racist cursing Cid, no "Let's Mosey", no sexual innuendos, nothing. Also I don't trust Square Enix with anything anymore. I'm still waiting on Versus XIII, and all I keep getting is a pink haired Cloud.

  • Halo 2 was by far my favorite game ever. Lots of fun memories. I don't care if I'm blinded by nostalgia, the game is effectively dead now, I'll hold onto whatever memories I have. Nowadays I don't really play online a lot, or in matchmaking/multiplayer, so I like games with strong campaigns. There are tons of those, but I'm kinda disappointed with how many games are geared towards multiplayer now.

    • dat replay value. Only the true good games for current-gen have a very large replay value.

    • The only aspects where old games stand up to modern standards is in terms of story and characters. Even then saying that old games are better in those respects is just opinion not fact. There are plenty of modern games with stories and characters that are evey bit as good as "classic" games and modern games are, overall, much better.

    • Compare the quality and replayability of games back then youll have your answer. Most games nowadays go for the money run. Looking pretty can sell a game or doom it. Back then that wasnt an issue as much as it is now. Halo CE back in the day was more of a show stopper than most games are now in every aspect thus bringing great memories.

      • Tech wise newer games are obviously better but they are just not as fun as the old ones and become boring very quickly, I don't know why. The only recent game I have played for long hours is Skyrim.

      • I'd have to disagree. Yes, most games today are great and I play them everyday, but after a certain point you just have enough and are bored to death with it. With older games, it's something about them that keeps them interesting for longer (if not forever). Perhaps because the first game you play that you liked will remain the best game for you, no matter how many better iterations of the game or series come out.

I won't argue that the tech isn't better, but the last time a story really captured me was Final Fantasy X, with the exception of The Walking Dead game. There are also certain games, like Final Fantasy Tactics or some of the older RPGs that I don't think would've benefited from more robust technology and still hold a candle to any current game as far as fun factor. There should also be some consideration to the fact that some of the earlier games spawned entire genres or atleast got them going on consoles. I personally don't remember playing any FPS before Goldeneye(I'm sure the genre was already well established on PC). I've played great FPS's since then, but you always look back on your first with some fondness. IDK, I guess when I look at it, I'm more nostalgic for the PS1 and N64 era than the SNES and Genesis era, which was the era of my childhood. I think the problem now is there are just so many AAA titles that come out, with so many being so similar. It's hard to get pumped about blasting aliens in one game when there's 30 others that do the same thing with its own little flair.

        • Because games have, by and large, been shit since 2007. They're brown and bloom fire and forget garbage aimed at the lowest common denominator for the sake of making a quick buck on an unfinished game and another buck on the DLC they held back to sell later. Most damning of all is watering down games to appeal to the CoD audience (IE: lowest common denominator). The most recent example is Dead Space. It was never particularly good as a survival horror, jump scares are about on level as jumping from around a corner and screaming "boo", but at least it tried to be something different. I'll retract this statement if you can name a recent game as deep, complex, and masterful as Deus Ex, but to quote the Agatha Man at Arms, 'tis folly.

Personally, I'd never argue that the games of the old are objectively better, but there are gems from the past that would be hard to imagine being topped. I'd be lying if I said technical aspects don't matter, but the point I am ultimately trying to reach is that the developer's craftsmanship is hands-down the most important factor, and I will say that a lot of developers today lack this craftsmanship and stick to what's safe (ie all of the CoD-inspired mediocrity). On the other side of the coin, every gen had the greats, but also had duds. I can recall having a hit and miss experience renting and buying games from the N64 era, and I will say that quality standards of games are better today. A mediocre game today might at least be playable, but a mediocre retro game may be less desirable than shoving thumb tacks in your eyes.

          • A pretty good example of this that comes to mind to me is Super Metroid. I played it recently, and it really doesn't hold up well at all compared to say, Metroid Fusion or Prime, yet it still gets unreal praise compared to them.

          • Games back in the day use to be about something. A story that made you want more and a new advance in gaming in every title. Today games work on a multiplayer and if have time try and make the campaign worth playing. Games today are better in the sense that they have more to work with but if the whole "live" aspect was taken out of today's gaming it would blow old games out of the water. Look at games like Arkham City and Far Cry 3 as a few example. Two of the best games ever made bar none. The sole focus was story and campaign gaming and as stated they turned out amazing. Again you take out "live" older games have no chance but pound for pound older games were way better. Post Script: That was more of a rant then trying to make a point so it's more then likely incoherent but I don't wanna read it over so blow me.

My only nostalgia is for Halo CE and Halo 2. I hate people who call it "Halo 1". It's Combat Evolved damn it.

              • I had much more fun (still do) playing older games. Such as DOOM, OoT, Road Rash etc than I do the latest games. Games being released these days lack originality are just repeats trying to copy each other. My Sega/N64 have seen more action than my 360 has over the past few months.

              • I wouldnt really call it blinded by nostalgia. Today games are designed using a lot more scientific research than in the past. Past games it took time and effort to accomplish tasks and were fun along the way. Todays games are designed to give you short term rewards to keep you happy like gambling at a casino. Experience, Weapon Experience, leveling up is all designed to keep you satisfied quickly. Kids today would play like half a level of Zelda and get bored because they aren't getting rewarded every five seconds. Its disappointing but the life of this industry.

              • The campaigns were far better and more enjoyable back then IMO. Plus certain franchises have gone to complete shit and their older games will always be better than what they have become.
