Somebody tell me all about Minecraft

I'm thinking of getting Minecraft, but before I do, I want to know what I can do in it. Can I realize any artistic vision I want? Are there any limits to what I can do? Could I build the Palace of Versailles or the Empire State Building? Is building tedious or efficient? Are the pieces unlimited, or will I be encountering annoying part limits like in Halo's Forge? Tell me all about Minecraft, anything notable that comes to mind. Edit: I've had Minecraft 360 for nearly a year now though, this thread be old
Can I realize any artistic vision I want?
In a sense. Anything you can transfer into the blocky aesthetic of the game is possible.
Are there any limits to what I can do?
Yes. The world height, from the bottom bedrock level to the highest point in the sky, is 256 blocks. If you're getting the game for the PC, the world can literally stretch on for longer than the equivalent size of the earth (using one block as one meter.)
Could I build the Palace of Versailles or the Empire State Building?
Short answer? Yes.
Is building tedious or efficient?
Building obscenely large structures and altering large swaths of land are not feasable without mods. With specially designed mods, it becomes much less tedious by allowing you to use all kinds of world editing tools. It's like going from kindergarten finger painting to professional Impressionist art.
Are the pieces unlimited, or will I be encountering annoying part limits like in Halo's Forge?
No real piece limit besides the (very high) build height. Hope this helps

        • Have you ever know a train hobbyist? You ok know, those people that spend their lives collecting train sets and building complex tracks in hopes that someday somebody will appreciate it? That's basically what minecraft is.

          • You can build anything in a specific mode which gives unlimited resources. Otherwise, it would be difficult.

                • This kind of sums it up. Not to mention Notch's been promising things that he hasn't delivered on since forever, and anything he does deliver on, he implements it in the shittiest way possible. And the Beta 1.8 adventure update took the direction Minecraft was going in, and completely turned it around, trying to make it a pseudo-RPG-Medieval-survival go-out-and-kill-this-dragon adventure quest. It's not even about exploring an unknown and unique (especially with that new world gen), yet strangely familiar and beautiful world, with a lingering, hidden sense of loneliness and despair, along with building some cool things in it. Oh, and he also dumped his shitty game onto some other guys for them to keep working on, while Notch goes of to reap the rewards and work on some other bullshit game that nobody cares about.

                  • The Minecraft wiki is your friend. You've got 255 blocks of height in which to build. Good, reliable Multiplayer Survival Servers are hard to come by. I was on a single, permanent world server for around two years before it shut down. (And I've got a copy of the map!) Mods can make it more fun. Texturepacks can make it more fun/interesting. BE CAREFUL OF GRIEFERS. You can basically place any block in any fashion you want, like a pixel. Removing blocks takes longer than placing them though. The most important thing is really to have some sort of objective. That is why I quit, I had no idea what to do and no one to show off my stuff to.

So apparently my internet cuts out whenever I open a new tab on the Minecraft Wiki... Like, every time I open a tab, exclusively on the Minecraft Wiki, about 10 seconds later, the internet will cut out as well as the TV, and then the connection comes back after a minute or two. Can anybody help with that?

                        • The pieces are limited to what you want to mine if you play survival. It's a lot of exploration and creative building. I recommend playing with friends. With creative mode you get unlimited blocks but I find it boring and much prefer the satisfaction of building with materials I had to retrieve from the endless underground. There are plenty of things to do. There are no real objectives and building big things can be pretty time consuming. It's more of casual game so not really for the mlg pro. I love it personally, a good game to just relax and forget about the day with friends.
