An observation I have made about depression

Some of you may already be aware of this but it has just recently come to my attention. People will often look to others in times of need, depression is certainly a time where help is needed. But what I've realised is that talking to someone about your depression really has no benefit. At least, not in my eyes. An example. I have a female friend of which I consider to be like a sister. We have that sort of brotherly-sisterly connection. I have once opened up to her properly before but I don't think it really helped overall. It was good to get it off my chest but she couldn't really help. So if I were to completely open up about how I feel, what could she do? Nothing. Her words wouldn't fix how I feel. Not everything. So opening yourself up to someone to show them the real you when your are really really low does nothing but expose yourself. You have to trust them to not tell others (an issue I struggle with) and yet you feel the same. So what's the point really? Like I said, getting it off your chest feels great but it is a small pro compared to all of the cons. So depression is kind of an unbeatable force, isn't it?

  • How about instead of making threads about your theories on depression, make one asking to make you happy?

  • No, it's not unbeatable, and that sort of thinking is what's giving away your power to overcome it. "Depression" isn't a freak force of nature, it's a word, a term to describe mood(s) . . . yes, it's real in the sense that such moods exist, but it's not a human-magnetic guillotine. But the only thing that has the ability to change that is yourself, your own will. That does not mean other people -- other things -- can't help you, but you have to allow them to help, you have to find them, whatever it may be. Find something that can make you happy, that has real value to you, and get it. And . . . sometimes you have to just tell people the truth, and trust them. Don't be afraid of fear, you have to embrace it. Allow yourself to take from this.

  • Sometimes you need a little exposing and trust. Maybe then her words will help, at least in some small way.

  • The more anti social you are the more depressed you'll be. I've been depressed once, way back in the day. Orange juice, fruit, a lot of sunlight, and doing social things helped a lot. So mine didn't last long at all.

  • I don't know, man. Talking about it sure helped me. You've just got to be honest with yourself and whoever you're talking to.

  • It doesn't make it better. But it can prevent it from getting worse. The best way IMO to fight depression is to hang out with friends who can understand you and who respect you for who you are. Or just try to be around people who make you happy, it helps more than you think it does. "Depression feeds on loneliness"

  • Natural selection - Fight to be the best. Not a second grade looser that feels sorry about himself. That's what I think about depression.

The only person that can truly help you with depression, is yourself. Other people can help you help yourself, but you can't rely on others for something you need to fight yourself. You have to remember it's own body, your own thoughts, emotions, actions, etc, the only person that can fight off an illness within (well, there's some exceptions), is you. You can't let it consume you. EDIT: You know how some people say, "You are your own worst enemy", I truly believe that statement is true for some, if not, most of us. We can honestly beat ourselves down to the dirt. The trick is, you can't let that part of you win. If you believe this depression is unbeatable, it will be. If you give yourself the power to hurt you so much mentally, you will. You have to realize you're doing this to yourself, and begin to work on it.

    • Yes, talking about mine doesn't help either.

    • Venting is better than keeping the cap on the boiling radiator, or something like that

    • You already resolved your issue of whether it is worth it to talk to another person.
It was good to get it off my chest but she couldn't really help.
Depression has become a growing trend since the realization of nihilism. It will drive us to our end, and if we overcome it we will be a stronger more intelligent species, but if we don't we will die out and surrender our place

        • You have a point, but instead of challenging depression, ask others opinions on the cause.
