The authors of the study conclude that the burden of proof rests on those who claim more guns equal more death and violent crime; such proponents should "at the very least [be able] to show a large number of nations with more guns have more death and that nations that impose stringent gun controls have achieved substantial reductions in criminal violence (or suicide)." But after intense study the authors conclude "those correlations are not observed when a large number of nations are compared around the world."

I should certainly think so.

Bad study is bad. We should just end the debate and ban all guns.

Did you know? If some asshole is going to shoot you for no reason, and you have a gun, you can shoot them first? Did you know? If some asshole is going to shoot you for no reason, and you don't have a gun, you're probably going to die?

Guns aren't the problem, it's the american culture

Edited by Kernel Kraut: 8/31/2013 6:12:04 PMWhat about the CDC study that was ordered by Obama that states: Most gun related deaths are suicides. 60% of Gun related deaths in fact. Defensive use of firearms is at least as common as criminal use of firearms Big bad evil rifles account for a very small number of yearly firearm related deaths Death from accidental discharge is on the decline. Mass Shooting are a fraction of gun related homicides Here you go if you want to read it

Take these facts:
1) This wasn't a Harvard study. It was a study published in a Harvard publication. There is a difference. 2) What the authors looked at, and the way it is being presented are two totally different things. 3) The authors are well known pro-gun champions. This throws the "study" into dubious light.
So basically, this is definitely a biased study and should be ignored.

These are calculated on a per 100,000 pop'n scale. The United Kingdom has tighter laws in regards to firearms versus the current American system. United Kingdom Total- 0.25 (2010) Homicides- 0.04 (2010) Suicides- 0.18 (2010) Unintentional- 0.01 (2010) Undetermined- 0.02 (2010) United States Total- 10.3 (2011) Homicides- 3.60 (2011) Suicides- 6.30 (2011) Unintentional- 0.30 (2011) Undetermined- 0.10 (2011) Source.

Human beings cannot finish an argument. This gun control issue will endure as long as there are firearms in this world.
-
Banning things doesn't work, look at drugs and the prohibition. Makes organized crime a bigger issue. And the average American isn't going on a mass murder spree with guns, the average American gun owner is using it to hunt.
-
Another gun thread, will it bring anything new to the table/argument? *reads thread* Not really, gonna go back to eating pizza.
-
I'll stick with the fact that Australia has not had any mass murders since they had citizens turn in guns and make them illegal to carry.
-
It is SUPPOSED to settle it, but unfortunately it won't due to libertards lol.
-
We've gone over that it IS NOT a study, but a rather a paper Harvard published on their site. Guess what? They've published anti-gun papers too.

Politics of all stripes have a tendency of ignoring studies that disprove their ideas. It's highly unlikely this will be solved.

Edited by Frnksnbns: 8/28/2013 10:36:51 PMAs long as guns are manufactured in the USA in high numbers, with relatively low retail prices, it will be impossible to keep them out of the hands of criminals or anyone for that matter. I support instant background checks, and I have no problem passing laws to regulate the privates sales more, but please don't pretend like guns won't get into the hands of thugs and criminals. The liberals promote these "gun free zones" and restrictions on public carry, and all they are doing is making people less safe. If politicians want to get tough on guns and actually do something, they need to start by dramatically increasing prison sentences for people who commit crimes with a firearm, regardless of how minor the crime seems to be. Hold up a 7-11 with a gun, mandatory 30 year sentence. Rob someone on the street with a gun, mandatory 30 year sentence. Get caught with a gun as a felon or a stolen gun, 20 years. I live in a city and we have armed robberies every day. We are all sick of the gun violence, but please do not expect me to surrender my ability to protect myself because you want to put a "gun free zone" sticker on your store window and feel happy feelings inside.

If you go to fbi.gov's own statistics it shows that since the 1980's gun ownership has gone up 53% and crime has gone down 47%(bc no one fks with people who can defend themselves) Guess what cities in the US have the highest crime/murder rates... Now guess what cities in the US have the strictest gun control laws... Libtards hate facts tho... QUESTION: Would you feel more safe with a sign in front of your house that says "this is a gun free zone"(like sandy hook) or a sign that says, "Heavily armed, there's nothing here worth dying for" If you chose the former, and not the latter you've gone full retard.
-
We should replace guns with Dildo Launchers. Crime has never been so slapstick!
-
You can't reason with rednecks. And this wasn't done by Harvard.

-
How about we all just shut up about "muh guns" already?
-
People are stubborn. That pretty much sums it up

Edited by Emacs: 8/28/2013 5:41:55 PMMost gun related crime involves gangs, who are themselves participating in a variety of other illegal activities. The average number of arrests for an intentional homicide (by firearm) victim in the US is 5. It's almost exclusively gangs killing people in other gangs. Government should go after the problem not the symptom, and not be influenced into make massive policy change by outlying events.

They lost all validation when they said Denmark had a high murder rate. I mean really. Denmark, high murder rate? Dafuq?
-
I still don't think it's a good idea to have unlimited access to firearms. Some gun control is fine.
