Genetic testing and modification during/before pregancy

So, i was having a discussion with my lady, we were talking children in the near future. She has two children currently, but got her tubes tied. Money isnt an issue, but i want a boy, of my own lineage, and it isnt that i wont care for her two, but i want to have a son, or daughter. She did some research to educate herself, and found some interesting stuff. Mainly a fertility clinic can test for autism, and other defects early, and even sex of the baby well before the cutt off for a chemical abortion, IE in the first month. Also this is so early, i believe it would be before she is even impregnated with the little dude/tte. Im all for this, we can choose the sex, and be sure the child wont have crippling diseases or even autism or mental retardation. Also there is the possibility of twins being chosen. Itll be expensive, but if youre going to do it, do it right. So what are the floods thoughts on Genetic modification before or during pregnancy, and not things that are for aesthetics, but that will be a benefit for the child, ie autism, retardation, crippling diseases. So thoughts on having a child genetically chosen and optimized?

    • I think optimising your child is a good idea. The only time I would be against it is if you were to directly interfere with the genes; all the child's genes are straight from the parents.

    • I support this 100%. If you could prevent a child having to be mentally handicapped, giving them the chance at a full, independent life that would be amazing. I don't agree with tweaking your child. If its to the point where micro transactions can be used to make your baby however you want, we may want to rethink our humanity.

      • What sort of time frame are we talking about? Right after conception or a month later?

        • I wouldn't so much call it "Genetic Modification" than 'Genetic Selection.' I don't see any issues with picking an embryo that has desirable traits, I don't think of fetuses as being human until the heart starts beating, and it sounds like all of this is happening on the cellular level. Good luck!

        • I'm not supportive of abortion, but doing it before implantation/pregnancy has occurred doesn't seem comparable to terminating pregnancy. Sounds interesting...

Mentally handicapped children have the same rights to live as everyone else, murdering people because of their genetic disabilities is an abomination. Now, if there were a way to prevent genetic diseases and defects without murdering innocent children, maybe I'd be okay with that.

Whilst some might disagree, I would be inclined to say that early screening for serious defects is a good thing. If it can be done before the Foetus has even begun to develop a CNS then I would be more ok with an abortion to prevent them being born with some messed up disease or mental handicap. I'm not saying we should liquidise the disabled and the retarded before anyone slippery slopes me ._. but it just prevents a large amount of suffering for the child and the parents. However, choosing a boy/girl and wanting a blonde hair, blue eyes white dragon is where I'd draw the line at not Ok. If it was me, I'd have all the tests done as early as possible to make sure that my future child wouldn't be born ill. Hell if the Ethics mob get over themselves and allow that nice new DNA slice and splice repair they have developed then almost any baby can be fixed before it's born so it's the same one but no longer going to die of Cystic Fibrosis or be a carrier for Huntingdons.
