Left my car in a parking lot, got to my car and started it and had a fancy exhaust note. Look at my stock exhaust in disbelief, get home and look under the car and catalytic converter is missing. So annoying to drive, don't know how those ricers do it.
For reference I drive a 1997 Toyota Previa in California. And I have to specify state because apparently California has strict emission laws so 2 parts are made: one for 49 states, and one for CA specific.
Thats all

If you can help in anyway that'd be great, but I don't expect you guys too at all.

How much are they worth?
-
Catalytic converters typically contain about 1.5g of Platinum (Pt), 0.5g of Palladium (Pd), and 0.1g of Rhodium (Rd). The platinum alone is worth about $70, the palladium another $15 or so, and the Rhodium is insignificant, but would come out to be about a dollar or so. Recyclers pay about $50 a converter, so the yield for stealing one isn't that bad. As for advice, I found this for you: http://www.sacrt.com/documents/catalytic.pdf

Well, good thing my car didnt have a cat when i bought it. Dont like the loud noise it makes, but meh.
-
What's that?
-
Once, a guy broke into my dad's car and stole the ashtray with all the change in it.

Edited by VIC: 1/24/2014 8:41:34 PMWhen you get a new cat, get your VIN engraved on it. A smart thief will still be able to sell it and you'll never find it but it still increases your chance of it being found by the cops before it goes bye bye forever.

Thank god they didn't take the flux capacitor.
-
There's platinum in those, if I'm not mistaken. That should explain why it's gone.
-
Pics or it didn't happen
-
At least he didn't steal your headlight fluid.....
-
That sucks man. Hope you get it fixed.

Edited by Mystic Sun: 1/24/2014 3:40:25 AMLE or DX? EDIT: Found one that fits both models.

Should I waste my time calling Scrap Metal companies near me or just let this one go? I wanna see if any of them got recent catalytic converters and potentially claim mine if found or at least find the guy who took it.

pretty shitty, Someone taking your Catty can really -blam!- you over, especially if you're in cali, feel sorry for you. The clever bastard is probably melting it himself if he's knowledgeable enough to know what's what, good luck finding it. whelp, lucky for me, I don't have a catty in my car because sponsors... they want my car to be more showy and loud/eye-catching, so they made me take it off -_- it gets really annoying.
-
Precious metals bud. Your cat has(had) it. Unless the cops analyzed your car , catching the douchebags is going to be unlikely. Oh, good luck getting a new one LOL

Platinum.

In most of the us that would really mean nothing, but here in glorious CA because of our crazy emission laws, those things can run you from $800-$1000 or more. So annoying sometimes
-
Bag your ride and drop it to the ground when not in use. That'll learn 'em. In Indiana I have not ever heard of this happening, but am aware that California has much stricter emissions testing. That said, we aren't ever tested. Hope you can get some aid from insurance on this at least.

How exactly could any of us help?
-
What a bunch of crap. I think my jeep has a leak, starting to get slightly louder. Snow is just abusive.
-
Some bright spark tried to steal my dad's except the genius just cut off a bit of the exhaust pipe. So it was still a costly repair but at least the stupid fecker turned up with something as worthless as his brain.
-
Uhh, can that go through insurance?
-
Do you live near anaheim in SoCal by any chance?

.1 Find the criminal. .2 Porch him.
