So an elderly couple locked themselves inside their Mazda for thirteen hours.

Time for them to be evaluated for being able to care for themselves. Just standard, everyday, year of car ownership should have made them pull or push every available object line on the door to figure out if they could get out or not. But at 65 & 68 they shouldn't be that clueless.
