VoG disappointments

I have done my first vault of glass on normal and I'm currently working on my second run. I have heard the raid is the best source of gear but so far I have not gotten anything but acendant things. I have seen a 30 or 301 get a vision of confluence from atheon which I was jealous of since I have no exotic weapons and only 3 legendary weapons. I know I must grind the raid but with limited time during week and lots of groups I have been in werent capable of beating atheon I find it hard to get decent things from vog. There's not really even a guaranteed engram or anything. Kinda disappointed
