Legendary/exotic problem

I almost fully upgraded my exotic chest piece when i came across a new legendary one. As it turns out, the new legendary armor is actually stronger than the exotic one once both are fully upgraded. I'm conflicted on whether i should keep the exotic or dismantle it and work on the legendary.
