My quest to get Thorn - aka Adventures in Humility

Like some of you, i suck at the crucible. And not just any kind of suck, i have never played PVP in any form so i am the noobiest of the noobs. I deleted the Thorn bounty the first time i picked it up. The second time i let it sit there for months before i started to do something about it. This is my story. My loadout was a voidwalker warlock, atheon's epilogue, a crappy blue shotgun and truth. I barely used AE at all, and can only remember 1 kill with it. Stage 0 - i've ventured into the crucible a few times with a total of ~6 hours played. After getting my ass handed to me in the most embarrassing and frustrating of ways, i basically gave up hope that i would ever be decent in PVP. i never got above 30/500 points and ended this period back at zero. Average K/D probably somewhere around 0.3. Stage 1 - i then went on youtube and watched a bunch of videos. Not of the ridiculous 40-50 kill games but of more reasonable playstyles. i realized that camping with a shotty seemed to be the lowest IQ way to stay above 0.6 K/D - so it seemed like as good of a fit as any for me. Armed with this knowledge i decided to swallow my pride and jump back in. After 2.5 hrs of experimentation, i was sitting on 90/500 and an avg of 0.7 K/D with probably 6-8 kills per game. Stage 2 - At this point i started to have a better feel for the maps and found a couple of go-to camp spots, and could remember where some of the heavy ammo spawns were. With another 2.5 hrs, i was able to get to 283/500 with an avg K/D of around 0.8. I would still have bad games but when the final screen came up, they would still be around 0.6 K/D so i didn't give up ground. i even had one game with a 1.4 K/D and 21 kills, but on average closer to 10 kills per game. This is when i really started to believe. Stage 3 - The final push. I started out ok but without noticing i started to play a lot more conservatively - like a subconscious prevent defense. I was also playing some maps that i didn't know (Exodus Blue, Anomaly) which led to some 0.4 K/D games and the inevitable expletive laced tirades with controller throwing and couch cushion punching. But after coming up the curve i turned things around and the finish line was in sight. My last game was Shores of Time with only 30 points to go. I was defending B when i saw someone jumping towards the platform and it was clear that they missed the jump short - but as they were fighting to get back up the cliff i calmly walked over and shotty/melee'd him - and the little yellow "corrupted hand cannon" bounty popped up on the screen... i immediately broke into a dance of joy (in game and in person) until someone nova bombed me. Having reached the end, i then played fast and loose for the rest of the game with a bunch of mid-air kills and some kill streaks that i really didn't deserve. At the final screen, i managed to get 17 kills with a 2.1 K/D which was a personal best - and i was the highest on my team (we lost but that's not important). In this stretch i averaged kills in the low teens with a K/D of 0.8 (should have been higher but prevent defense never works). So here i am - exhausted from the journey but with a few more hairs on my chest. There are no youtube videos or twitch streams of this quest because it was not pretty. There is also no crucible advice here because i am nowhere near qualified to give it. All i have is the solemn pride that comes from finishing something i never thought i was capable of - and a story that might encourage other PVP noobs out there. Now, can anyone help me take down Xyor? ------------------------- EDIT: Thanks for all of the replies. I've gotta say that the community is one of the best parts of this game. Was able to get my shiny new Thorn today along with Switchfire26 (who also needed to kill xyor) and Jasond1298 - appreciate the help fellas. I'm looking forward to spending more time in the crucible painting fools green with this thing...

      • That story was awesome. I struggle with crucible as well. I just completed mine Yesterday. I was very happy to go to the speaker to receive my shiny new weapon. Thorn is well worth the grind. If I can do this bounty anyone can.

        • Ps3 here username is the same. Nice story... I just finished mine too, I started in November. This week has been really slow as far as friends online goes, I went from 2 pages of friends to 3 friends online. I'll be on in about 2 12/ hours from now. 54 years old and I've never been in a crucible type of situation and quite frankly I never want to return there either. I think I will delete all my other exotic bounties once I have my thorn in hand. I've done xyor the unwed twice now (for friends), wish I could remember who they were.

        • My Thorn bounty is sitting at 477/500, I need to find the time to get back at it to finish that up, and then I'll be ready to hit Xyor as well.

        • what console? honestly, killing Xyor is a relatively easy task since we are much higher levels then we were months ago and better weapons exist.

        • Took me about 8 matches. Hated doing it though, shotguns are lame. Glad I'm back to sniping, with my beautiful Thorn to accompany me.

        • The last line is the best. Good for you, though. If you need help with Xyor and your on PS4, add me at: FunkeyGraveDigr. I've beaten her the times and soloed her once. I need one more Thorn, too.

        • I've been pretty good at PvP in every shooter I've played so I didn't encounter the same issues you described, the only issue I had was not having a single decent void weapon. I had already tried a few weeks ago to get it done with Atheon's Epilogue but the gun is just. . . so . . . bad. . . I have a void LDR but I decided against being that scumbag who snipes in Crucible. I picked up a crappy old Void shotgun the night before Iron Banner and said, "I'm getting this -blam!-ing Thorn so I can murder people in IB." Took me two hours with a shitty void shotgun and a quite a few multi-kills with my corrective measure, but I got it. And my god was it worth it! The strike was easy, so no problems there. How I got through the crappy void shotgun was to run around in Rumble with that, my Red Death, and Corrective Measure. I really excel with a run and gun playstyle so I was doing pretty good out gunning people with Felwinter's, Invective, and a whole bunch of other good shotguns with just my rare. Added a new level to how I use tactics and maneuvering to win upcoming engagements, and made me respect my opponents more despite owning them with a rare shotgun, which made me feel pretty proud of myself.

        • Will you be spending more time in the Crucible now that you have accomplished the PvP portion of the bounty?

        • Congrats! The pvp portion intimidated the hell out of me, and I managed to pull through in a way much like yours. Xyor was the hardest part. At the time, I only had one friend that had a ps4 and I wasn't on the forums. It took way too long to solo that at level 28...

        • I had a similar experience when completing my Thorn bounty. Although I did not camp. I found that the style that best suited me was the " run and gun" I hated it at first, but as I learned the maps, and choke points it became much easier. I was actually enjoying myself so much at the end, that I did not realize I finished the bounty until after 2 extra matches.

Congratulations! That bounty is a pain, but by doing it I really have come to love pvp. I have a mate who also need to do the last strike for almighty Thorn. He's in the clan: switchfire26. Either flick him a message or all three of us could do it. Tomorrow though.

        • sounds pretty much a mirror for me, I almost destroyed a couple of controllers, the bounty did make me a better crucible player, I am still pretty bad, but I had some pretty good advise to help. I did the same watching Youtube vids and Twitch streams, watch RealKraftyy on Twitch he is a really good player. The next stage is possible solo, I managed it which means anyone with both thumbs can do it as well, just take it slow and be patient, and whatever you do don't abandon the bounty now.

        • Well done! (coming from another crappy crucible player) . Yeah, you should have a couple of guys with you to kill Xyor. I thought it would be a cake walk but it was a little tricky. Nothing we couldn't handle for sure. Helped one of my clan mates get his Thorne. Man, when he got it, I've never heard someone so excited! Seems like a bounty definitely worth doing, (I"m at the crucible part).
