A post about Plagiarism

So this started from a post in the Inktober thread, Within it a user made a post saying: "My favorite subclass" with this image posted. Upon seeing the image I called him out saying it wasnt a pen drawing but a photo filter applied to an image. We went back and forth for awhile ultimately ending in him muting me. Now it was requested that I compare the image to it's original so I have done just that above (Full Opacity for those interested) and In doing so you can clearly see that this image is indeed Plagiarized. Original Image copied for reference It's possible for people to draw identical images, maybe you just suck well true that it is indeed possible, but here's the kicker: He said that this is an Ink Drawing he did a few months back when the creations page was first introduced. Let me go into more detail on why that's false: Please turn your attention to this copy of his image and look closely to the areas I circled. First lets discuss the circled are of the bow, look how light that is. It's impossible to obtain that kind of glow effect using pen, ink is either black or slightly less black (that's why when people shade or add shadow within an ink drawing they use methods like cross stitching). alright with that out of the way lets look at the other circled area in the upper right hand corner. See those marks(they can also be found all around the image), why are they even there to begin with? If this were a pen drawing why include such an incredibly small detail? there's also the fact that they are incredibly light and impossible to draw with ink, so why are they there? They are small particle effects that were present on the original image that got masked over when he applied the filter. now onto another set of circles, this time bringing into focus the fabric within the image. Not only is the fabric in several areas too light to be pen but just unnatural looking to begin with. This image is clearly filtered and not a pen drawing. Now onto another note: in our discussion I asked him to prove it was his work by either: 1) taking another image of the drawing with his signature and posting it 2) Posting another piece of his art (with signature) to show he is capable of creating such a piece. 3) Drawing something new to show he at least has the skills required to make a drawing as such. He did none of these things and instead said he "lost it" and had no reason to try proving himself to me. Plagiarism is a serious thing to accuse an artist of. If it were me in his shoes as the accused I'd do everything I could to prove them false and defend my name as an artist. Ok you've made your point, we done here? No! filters on images are fine but here's the problem with this situation: He took an official Bungie Nightstalker render, Cropped and resized it, applied a filter, and then posted it with the intent of passing it off as his art and getting prizes for said image. This is Flat out Plagiarism and absolutely Unacceptable. One of the worst things too is that, In regards to Inktober, He could of just as easily posted a stick figure guardian and had just as equal a chance at the prize as everyone else, but he didn't do that. Instead he posted A plagiarized image, which brings me to my next point: What are we going to do about this? Not just His but Plagiarism in general, It's a serious problem that needs to be addressed. It robs from hard working artists. It gives the rest of us who work hard to draw a bad name. If any is discovered I think there should be actions taken against it. If it were up to me I'd at least have the person banned, but I don't make the rules. I don't know what This group's policy is on Plagiarized works but if there are none some definitely need to be made. Anyways that's all I have to say on the matter right now, Have a good evening and thanks for reading.

  • I frown so much when I see plagiarism; What is the update on his thingy? Haven't been able to see it in creations page. Personally, plagiarism on a picture is soo bad, especially since he mysteriously "lost" it. Code word for, I really didn't ink it. All drawings especially good ones, are always in safe places in art portfolios or some safe area where you pile traditional arts or even file it for easy finding. It would be much more believable for him to take an actual photo, like on a table or something, up close where it'd be easy to tell if it was either printed or not. Reminds me of a story my sister told me about this one girl who turned in plagiarized artwork and it was sooooo obvious she didn't paint it. It just drops my heart when I hear/see things about plagiarism to the brink it makes me cringe. v . v

  • I like you more and more, m8. Respect. I've lost my cool over plagarism more than I'd like to admit, even on these forums.

    • Isn't that just a slightly embossed image. The embossed one doesn't look hand drawn at all

        • Some people just don't have any self respect for the hard work of others. For me I'm currently working on a reference sketch of the Sunbreaker titan from the bungie posters... This is me actually putting in time to draw the titan. Art isn't easy to do it requires a lot of patience and time and practice to be able to create great works of art. I would love to share my rendition of Bungies Sunbreaker titan without someone trying to pass it of as one of their own. Thanks for pointing out what some people have no respect in for hard working people.

          • If you've worked with pen and ink or brush and ink you can get light colours along with some sort of shading albeit not very smooth. But this picture is definitely plagiarized.

              • yup, as a self-taught traditional artist, whom is currently studying (as in school) the digital mediums, i can agree with almost everything down to the letter. some tid-bits: with a ball-point pen, I can actually draw different shades, from light pen-strokes that hardly exist to medium lines that are clearly less than "normal" for the pen, and above. this skill, however, is very rare because A) i learned it from YEARS of practice with a ball-point, and B) who uses ball-point anyways? that being said, those lines are NOT like what i described at all. this isn't meant to be any sort of counter-argument, just a sort of "you know..." thing. also, i am growing more... distaistful for the digital mediums because of things like this. i spent MY ENTIRE LIFE acquiring true drawing skills, and to have people like this press some buttons and claim to be my peers.... hmph. (and for those whom are curious, here's some doodles i scanned at school: I dont have a scanner at home to constantly update :p) http://spacewhaleworship.tumblr.com/

                • As a writer, I've had a lot of my own work plagiarized. It's a serious blow to the pride, and something that has always made me furious. Why should I work hard on writing something that others enjoy, that has an emotional impact on them, when someone else is just going to take it and claim it as their own? I've made people cry over things I've written as often as I've made them laugh. What's even worse, though, is that many people and many organizations don't take plagiarism seriously. I believe in serious repercussions for stealing someone's work and attempting to pass it off as original. Banning is a funny thing, because internet and forums, but I see loss of artistic credibility as a very serious thing. I'm glad to see others taking a harder stance on stuff like this. At least the individual in question didn't win, if I read the comments here correctly. It's a bad day when we start seeing theft rewarded.

                  • Agreed! I have a friend who loves to draw, and I love to write. If her work or my work ever got plagiarized, I would do everything in my power to show who is the original maker! We put a lot of work into these things!

                    • You've certainly got a keen eye. It does suck that people would intentionally try to pass that off as their own work. The user probably thought no one would notice, which is baffling when he tried to enter a contest hosted by a group of artists who have carrying skills and talents. The internet mentality struck again. People think because they're anonymous it gives them a free pass to do what they like and get away with it. I'm glad to see a lot of users frowning upon this type of behavior.

It does remind me of those image-filter apps that let you add a layer of opaque to the photo. I see what you mean with the bow and it being too white. Although, wouldn't erasing give it that light effect? Still, the picture does look fishy to me.

                            1) please remove the user's name, as this is a public post. The CoC is open to interpretation by the site ninjas and some of them deem this sort of thing harassment. 2)Group policy follows that of the mains, plagiarism is against the rules. I prefer to always warn severely before banning (though there can be exceptions for extremely severe infractions). Beyond that I don't really like to discuss disciplinary action against specific users, it's something I learned from moderating in TFL. In this specific case I did have a slow response/not enough time spent investigating, and I take responsibility for that. I've been a bit busy as October is not just for ink, it's also a month of midterms exams.

                            • This guy/girl here has some bad Photoshop skillz lol, but I understand where you are coming from. Interpretation of original art, if original art is mentioned as source for inspiration, is all good as far as I'm concerned. Think Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup. I see it all the time on Bungie's submissions, use of filters + interesting composition can be cool. Red flag for image submission is a low resolution with artifacts all over the place. (like the image you've shown). I try to help Progo for his contest and do basic reverse search if something doesn't look right. Did this guy/girl win anything? They should be disqualified but not sure about banned. If they truly have no art to express, they probably won't be doing again.
