How is minutesPlayedTotal calculated?

The minutesPlayedTotal value returned per character seems really high. Is it somehow inflated? Or is it just that it also factors in all idle time including time in orbit, etc?

Yes, minutesPlayedTotal counts the entire time that your account has been logged into Destiny, regardless of whether or not you're actually in an Activity.

Have you checked it against activityDurationSeconds of all of ActivityHistory's activities combined?
