Aros Of Earth

Here is my first try at a Destiny based story. Let me know what you think! Aros Of Earth By: Mcnasty6091 A soft crunch, a slight snap of a twig. The only sound in the calm void of the forest. I whistle a call….an echo. I lean forward, my body tense and my heart racing. I’ve done this a hundred times, but every time one mistake could lead to disaster. A scar on my side a reminder of such a mistake. A small tree some fifty yards away, lurches forward and then collapses. They’re here. I blend in well enough with the sun on the horizon to my back just as I had learned from my father. I bring the scope to my eye and wait. One, then two, then five… five Cabal… I wasn’t expecting this. We had thought only two. A forward scout party, but with five here it could only mean that the main body was close behind. We would have to be perfect. Nothing else would do. I hear a whistle… I echo. A shiver runs down my neck, fear or excitement I can’t be sure. It’s almost time though and I need to be ready. I can hear noises now. Far off but coming closer. It sounds like a herd of giants. I laugh at this thought for what else could it be. The Cabal were great hulking beasts of meat and armor. Small brains full of vicious senseless anger. They never ventured this close to the wall. Why now? A tree is uprooted before my eyes, just twenty yards off. I’m ready and I wait for my signal. They travel in a forward arrow with a lead and two flanking each side. I take aim at the back left as I know my partner will be aiming at the back right. Better to take them out back to front without alerting the forward party right away. I start to pull my trigger and let out a low whistle. A muffled pop reverberates around me as the back two stagger and fall forward. I hurry and take my aim at the second… no time to hesitate and I fire. Only my target falls though as I hear a crashing sound off to my right. As the first ones fall I go to fire on the second line when the very ground beneath my feet begins to shake. I only have time to fall backward as a Cabal scout crashes through where I was just positioned. I drop my gun…damn. I’m on my back scrambling to get up. As I reach to my side, the beast turns on me, beady eyes of fury focused on its prey with a blood lust. It charges and roars at me, and in a blink of an eye its over. I stand above the corpse, a smoking barrel held in my hand. I hear the shot and hope it drove home. The remaining two have finally begun to focus and understand what was happening and they start to take cover. I fire and graze ones shoulder. Shit. I hear another whistle and thank whatever gods there are and return the call. Two on two. I like these odds quite a bit more. But with them in cover I’m going to have to move in which isn’t what I had planned. But a lot of things aren’t going as planned today, so what’s new. I sling my rifle across my back and take out the two blades strapped to my thighs and move in. I whistle two short chirps, a call for distraction. There’s an explosion behind the two Cabal which causes them both to abandon their cover…pop pop. One goes down as I hurl myself forward with as much speed as I can. And while the one still standing turns to see his fallen comrade I leap with both blades flashing in a wide open arc and finding their home at the base of the helmet. He falls. I hear footsteps at my side and I turn blades ready. Out of the brush comes my partner. “Zelus, brother, are you ok?”, I ask. “I am. Damned beast smashed my rifle to pieces…”, he replies. “Well that we can mend.” “Why were they so close?” “I’m not sure. Nothing has ventured this far since…since mother was taken.” “We have to warn the city, Aros.” “I know… I haven’t been back in years…”
