The balance in neutrality for me, to be good or bad then requires appropriate action or non action in the moment, the choice should carry no burden or pre judgement from the past, one's good can be another's bad

    • I want a guy or girl that does things their way like killing however they want for example. But I want them to be on the good side because by doing this you will balance out the need for violence and the need for a daring and interesting main character. Or you could make your story be the decision that the character has to make whether they will be good or evil

    • Rather than just using black or white, use the Alignment system from D&D. You'll have much more to work with.

    • Shoehorning characters strictly into "good" and "evil" tend to produce boring characters with generic personalities. I'd classify a character by anything else other than some vague alignment.

    • I like personally like both. Of course everyone is rooting for the good guy, but I love psychology and figuring out why people do what they do, so it's always interesting to see the villain's motives. Like in my story, the villain is a Fallen, but I wanted him to come off as sophisticated and interesting. I think he ended up pretty badass, but since it's a first person story, you don't have much to get inside his head since you're going off of the narrator's thoughts. So in my next story it'll be third person and give both the hero and the villain equal love so the villain is much more rounded.

    • Lolmorality. Everybody is an enormous, unique mess of characteristics, and labelling them as 'good' or 'bad' is naive and uninteresting.

    • Depends on the setting and actual character.

    • I guess i lean towards the hero. I cant help it but i def hwve a save the world mentality. Not saying i wont do bad or brutal things but when i do theres typically a good reason for it

    • I prefer those characters that do what they do for a personal reason like revenge or helping someone they know and in doing so they do the good thing.

    • Someone who just goes through life with their own principles, but respects others and does generous deeds for others.A person who helps others, but expects nothing more from them. That's my character. Maybe their traits and character comes off as maybe kinda dick-ish, but they never turn down the opportunity to help those who need or want it.

    • Do you guys like breaking bad? Because sometimes I wished there were episodes where it focused on gus fring (the man who was in the wolf pack trailer for destiny) who was the antagonist in breaking bad. I'd like to see stories focus on an antagonist

      • Was once bad, but is now good. How you might ask, amnesia. I love myself a good old fashioned amnesiac. Or multiple personality disorder. I have one character who has a mostly good personality and a pretty much downright terrifyingly evil personality. The catch is that he can't use the travelers power for some reason with his good one, so when those bad guys be coming they be -blam!-ed

      • From most of my experiences (ESPECIALLY the Fable trilogy) I was good for a long time, but my darker side inevitably took control and started being the bad guy. Skyrim I've always either been good with some characters, or bad with others however.

      • I'm a writer, and l choose none of the above. It's not very interesting if someone has the perfect hero or the perfect villain. People don't generally connect with those characters because they are not dynamic and therefore not entirely interesting. I prefer either the antihero or the flawed hero. They offer more interesting and entertaining stories and backgrounds. I incorporate this into my stories. I have 3 stories, in one the protagonist is struggling with his morality and humanity, in another the protagonist doesn't even want to be a hero (he wants a simpler life) and in the third doesn't know if he wants to save the world as it is or make it a better place for everyone, at the expense of others.

      • This is my life! I do what want! of course, even if I'm neutral, generally guardians are going to be heroes of some kind

      • Who doesn't want a hero of some kind? However I think that it shouldn't be as simple as the perfect protagonist always succeeding, always knowing what to do, and never suffer some sort of loss. I think there should be weaknesses, hurdles, tragedies, hardships, and losses they suffer. That will make for a more unique blend of characters regardless of whether they are good or evil. It would take a little more work to do that but the character becomes more relatable and human to the reader, which will help its chances of being read.

        • Well, in my opinion no character can be entirely good or evil. The best fanfics I ever wrote were ones that I took full advantage of moral relativism. I need to make my Hero in the story seem less infallible and the Villain not entirely evil. This helps me give more depth to the character. However that being said, you can have a more traditional story. For instance the movie Gladiator has some of the best Hero vs. Villian dynamics I have ever seen. The trick is implementing that in a non cliche way. That's my two cents though. You probably knew all about that anyway but I just felt like sharing, hopefully it's at least a little helpful to someone.

        • I think there has to be a strong balance between the good and evil characters. Even taking it a step further and, not necessarily making it neutral, making the good struggle with the evil in an individual character is an interesting tact to building a character. But good and evil are necessary. There has to be a conflict between those that are opposed to each other. They don't even have to necessarily be people or aliens, but even an ideal, event, or internal war.

        • Rain (R777), that question in your OP is an awful one. I don't care if I'm reading about a character who's good, evil, or any shade of neutral. I care if the STORY ITSELF is good and if the characters are "good". The hardest part is making the events tie into each other and making the characters good characters. I can offer you no advice on how to do that I'm afraid. I'd recommend you read some stories containing a bunch of different personalities AND character types. Looking up psychological disorders and 'what motivates people other than greed to do awful things' might help? I dunno.

Well written, and genuinely fun or interesting characters are cool, whatever their disposition. Problem is, most fan fics that people do are self-insertions and/ or marry sues.
