Guardians - Immortal?

It's something thats been bugging me for a good while. We know Guardians are 'undead', raised from the ancient dead of Humanity, or the Awoken, or reactivated in the case of the Exo. But are they immortal? Will they live for ever? Will they die when the Traveler's light no longer presists with them?

  • I think that they might die without the light eventually (natural speed) and live a lot longer with it but then we see Eris, and it makes me question my belief system.

    • I believe that since light is eternal, the guardians are eternal. See, the guardians were given a light. A light cannot be smited by Darkness, it can only cover it. Even when covered, we live. This explains how we can be revived by our ghosts. We contain light. Now, certain types of enemies can eat light. I dont believe they are dead after their light is eaten. I believe they are simply hidden. Contained inside of the belly of the beast, they are blotted out by the Darkness. But they live on in torment. How else could the ghost track the sword of crota by the amount of guardians its "killed". Thats because they are simply "disabled". Put out of commision, but not dead. So, still traceable. So if nothing puts out a light, what happens to the light? In this case. I domt have an answer. In all our years living, none of us have experienced light being unattainable. Light js always present through some means. And energy isn't eliminated, it is transformed. So, assuming we are literally the culmimation of pure light energy, as long as we aren't transformed into something else, we cannot die. We are endless. And thats the power of the traveler. To pour its light into a vessel. Those vessels are the ghosts. And the ghosts can each pour some of their light into a guardian. And that is why they coexist together. They are bound by the parent energy source. This explains why eris morn comes off so damned purturbed. She is without her second half. Half of her is gone. Half of her is a hidden light. The other half, is the light that her late ghost gave her.

In the mission where the main character has to travel into the temple of Crota we see a dead guardian.

maybe not immortal but they most likely have eternal life , one of the reasons I think this is because if you look at all the guardians at the tower they are all roughly the same age and in there prime as would be most fitting for their duty

        • I think if they lose their ghost, they can die, as that is needed for basically 'life support' when they do die and need revival

        • I don't think Guardians are immortal, if you look at Kabr and Eris's fireteam, most of them are gone/dead. The way the game handles it is typical of any FPS/MMO. The main player character can't die, if you do, no more game.

          • From the sound of it, you can think of the ghost as your soul, with the exception that it's a physical entity. so as long as you have your "soul" you can never truely die. your ghost dies, you die. Another way to think about it is as a puppet. If your puppeteer (Ghost) is captured or killed, there's nothing to give the puppet (you) life. age wise, no. bodies will still deteriorate into dust eventually. maybe an Exo could, but parts might need to be replaced, which might throw off the ghost.
