The Darkness

So ever since before Destiny came out, I've been wondering, what is the Darkness? Is it an actual entity, or is it something else? My current theory is that it is a metaphor for Death, because when the Darkness came most of humanity died out at the hands of the Minions of the Darkness. I believe that the Minions of the Darkness (Fallen, Hive, Vex, and Cabal) are just the bringers of death, and that the Darkness is the embodiment of this imminent threat of death for humanity. Something used to visualize our enemy as one threat, something that is the opposite of our Protector, the Traveler. The Traveler brings (and embodies) life, and the Darkness brings / is death. The only kink in my theory (that the Darkness is a metaphor instead of an actual entity) is the Heart of Darkness. The Heart of Darkness is a major unknown which is only able to be explained as being the Darkness itself, but I think it is something different. The Vex appeared to be at war with us for a long time, but if the Heart of Darkness was such an imminent threat, one would assume that it would be relatively new threat, compared to everything else. They have been fighting us for much longer than how long I believe the Heart that they discovered has been around, which leads me to believe that they have been and still are "Minions of the Darkness" / "Bringers of Death" even without the Heart, and that finding the Heart, while changing their motives, still didn't change that fact. This leads me to believe that the Heart, while still a major threat, isn't the Darkness incarnate, but something else.

  • Personally,I feel like the darkness is some sort of force that is "controlling" the minions of darkness. The only thing I have to back it up though is the actions of enemies who wage war on each other. It shows the chaotic nature of the darkness in that they all seem to hate one another, but hate guardians over all else. Once a guardian goes down they seem to go after each other. I do believe though that there are stories 'lore' of a guardian who fought side by side with a fallen, but after the hive enemies were slain tried to kill the Guardian. So in the actual lore there isn't much to back my views but I'd like to think it stands for something at least

  • I personally believe that The Darkness is just that: darkness. I want to assume that it's a physical manifestation and/or incarnate of the void that all life once sprung from. I've been tossing a theory in my head that involved the Traveler and this dark counter-part for a while now, but what makes the most sense to me is the idea that The Traveler is an entity of change, and that The Darkness is an entity of stagnation. Maybe The Darkness wants the universe to remain as it is, with no species rising above the others to take up more of it's territory, or something along those lines, while The Traveler wants different races and cultures to thrive in this expansive universe, which is why it took up the responsibility of doing so, much to the dismay of The Darkness. But The Traveler attempted to do this many times on different civilizations, such as The Fallen, with humanity being it's first success. But The Darkness gathered the different species The Traveler had previously scorned, and sent them off to destroy us at the peak of our Golden Age, starting The Collapse. But The Traveler, wanting to save it's first success and greatest creation, sacrificed itself and saved us all. And, well, you know the rest from there. But hey, that's just a theory... a Destiny theory! Thanks for reading! xP
