While I'm generally a fan of Life - not necessarily what people do with it - there's a really bad nagging feeling inside of me that bringing children into this world is cruel. My mother said to me a few years ago that she didn't know whether or not to have children, because it'd feel cruel to make them live in this world.
Of course, this no doubt sounds like Verbatim's ideas to a lot of you at this point. Disregarding his image and infamy, can't we all admit that, even if minimally, he is correct. There is a level of cruelty in the production of children. While I wouldn't go insofar as to advocate anti-natalism, the personal level of choosing to have a child has been playing on my conscience a bit recently.
And while I can concede that there is a lot of beauty in the world, particularly in nature. . . The world is sick. Humans were never made to function optimally in civilisation and developed society. Rates of depression are on the rise, and suicide is the #2 leading cause of death worldwide.
So, what do you guys think? Is it cruel to have children?

As long as you're in a healthy economic standing and know how to care for a child, I don't think it'd be cruel. Yes, the world can be a dark place at times, and there's a chance that the life of a child can become an absolute hell eventually, but there's still a chance that they could live a rich and fulfilling life as well. Despite the everlasting presence of death, poverty, disease and numerous other means of suffering in the world, there's still a lot of beauty to be found in it, and a lot of potential for someone to bring rise to something good from it.

This is why birth rates are on the decline. People realize, "Wow.. I better think twice before bringing a child in this world. It might grow up and hate me for doing such a thing"
-
Ehhhh It depends I there dipshits are not
-
Right now I'm pregnant. Sure, the world is a terrible place, but life is worth an experience. It has it's ups and downs, but generally life is awesome

The doctor slapped your parents when they had you then.

It's cruel to children to have certain parents. It's cruel to parents to have certain children. But overall, no, it is not cruel to have children.
-
It can be.
-
Then let's make babies that will grow up and make the world a better place so it will be not cruel to have babies.
-
Everyone should be greatful for a chance at greatness.
-
But you're relatively wealthy. Hell you might even be in the world's top 1% (this goes for most Floodians). Your kids would do just fine.
-
Yes. I would rather not consciously introduce someone to violence, corruption, and sin.
-
its only cruel to have children if you dont have the means to care for them.
-
In you case yes because you question if you want a child have no doubts before you have a child. Or if you decide against having a child then that's fine But if you want a child then go for it the world is cruel sometime but it is beautiful as well
-
Hang on, I'll ask my son if he regrets being born. ........... I think he would vote no. His actual words were "what kind of a stupid question is that"? - Der
-
No The good of this world is more than enough to sustain a child They deserve to experience it
-
Dat Verbatim bait... OT: Yeah, kind of.
-
I prefer the term selfish
-
Eh. I just don't want kids. I could spout crap about wanting to live my life or something, but really, I'm a lazy bastard and I know I would be a horrible parent. Better that life not be there than have two ruined.
-
It really depends on your circumstances. If you can reasonably guarantee that you can give a child the attention and care they need then(to me) it's acceptable. I think about this a lot too, that is why I'm a proponent of procreative beneficence and bioethical abolitionism. Procreative beneficence proposes making advances in genetic engineering to the point where we can guarantee birth defects are a non issue. Bioethical abolitionism proposes use of neuroscience, neuropharmocology, cybernetics, and genetic engineering to remove the capacity suffering(for those that wish it) and the hedonic treadmill. When there are other ways to solve a problem why go with the one where we necessarily go extinct?

I feel like it's that kind of attitude that leads to a worsening state of the world. Accept the good and the bad, but strive for the better.
-
Nope. Just because raising children is not easy doesn't mean it's bad to have them.

Edited by Scarecrow: 3/6/2014 7:51:19 PMLife is hard, but it's good. Anyone can have a happy life, they just have to try. It's a horrible, awful, wonderful world that we live in, and anyone can affect it in a negative or positive way. Every life counts, including anyone who might be reading this post. tl;dr: no.

I plan to adopt rather than have my own. And I will be the greatest parent ever. It is my life goal.
