The sun was setting over the horizon, and the lights were coming on. Jessica had just put the dishes away and her little brother was already after the cookie jar.
"When's mommy gonna come?"
"Soon Jason, I'm sure the bus is just running late." A lie is the best she can do to keep her little brother calm. Mom was one of those people who was always on a tight schedule, and never missed a deadline, and certainly never ran late without calling. But something was off this time. She could just feel it. She sits on the couch and turns the tv on.
"Can we watch spongebob?" Jason runs over to the couch from the dinning room, and sits next her. Mom usually let Jason watch anything that was on the kids channels, but if she turned her back for just a moment, he would have the tv on some channel inappropriate for a 6 year old.
"No Jason, I need to check something first." She turns on the news, only to regret it. There was sorrow on the anchors faces and there was a message on the bottom of the screen in the bold white letters, usually portraying some important message. They read,"Terror strikes downtown Los Angeles". What? She turns up the volume to hear what the people were saying."A bomb goes off in LA subway, causing tunnels to collapse. The death toll is now over one thousand and rising, and over twenty five hundred wounded." She can't turn the television off fast enough.
" What happened?"Jason was starring at her, his eyes filled with curiosity.
"Some bad people did something bad, and it made a lot of people very sad."
Reaching over She grabs the telephone and dials Mom's number. "Your call cannot be connected at this time...." That's weird, she always answers her phone.
"Jason, go on to bed." It's the only thing that she can think to do now to keep him calm.
"But I'm not tired!" Jason contests to his sister. Jessica just glares at him, and he knows that the argument is over. He walks upstairs and the slam of his bedroom door rattles her spine. He'll get over it by morning, I hope. With nothing more to do, and the fear of turning on the television, Jessica goes up to her bedroom, next to her mother's, which is next to Jason's. It had always been that way. Their mother wanted to be in-between the children's rooms. Partially to be able to get to either one really fast if there was a cry for help, but mainly it was because she like being surrounded, she was afraid of being alone. Born to a single mother, it wasn't always the easiest of things being the youngest of five. Her older siblings were constantlyl getting her in trouble. By age six, she had been whipped, strangled, drowned, hanged, and any other sort of torture that four brothers could come up with. By the time she graduated high school, she had slept with almost every guy in the school.
Jessica crawls strait into bed with the intent of falling asleep, but her conscious had other plans. Being unable to sleep, she reached under her bed and pulled out her laptop.
Her attempt to watch YouTube videos wasn't very successful. As soon as the site popped up she regretted it. Bomb videos were all over the front page, but not the videos you'd be expecting. Somebody hacked the site. All the videos were labeled "Prepare to die" followed by a city. She clicked on a different section of the page, but her screen went black. A mans face popped up on the screen, and he began to speak. "Citizens of America, we ask that you return to your homes, and remain calm. The United States government has pushed the world around long enough. It's time that they know what it feels like to beleaguered. They will fall, and so will thing or anyone that gets in our way. It's time for the world to be free, without any superficial force to stop it. Stand with us, and free yourself from this worlds laws. As a member of the United Union, you'll be free to live to your own devices. There will be no taxes, no police, no government stealing your hard earned money. All that is asked, is that you respect your fellow members, help out anyone in need, put others above yourself.
