new guy asking for directions!
my warlock is lvl 23, and im not sure what im supposed to do at this point. havent gotten dark below yet. and i feel my gear isnt that glorious.

Do strikes appropriate to your level in order to gain Vanguard marks, you'll need these vanguard marks to buy vanguard equipment ( which should get you to Lv.31 ). In the process you may also get legendary loot good enough to use. Patrol missions will help you gain Vanguard commendations ( also necessary for buying Vanguard gear ). You can also do the crucible. Loot drops are supposedly good there. You will gain crucible marks and commendations here which can be used to buy gear from the crucible vendors. You can also join a faction. Equip faction gear in order to earn faction rep. This and crucible marks and crucible commendations will allow you to buy gear from them.

Levels 24-26 are stopping point. Make sure u make 3 characters. From there you play strikes or daily events to max your marks. Do bounties to level your faction up. By leveling the factions you will earn commendations. You also have to level your factions to even buy the gear. The best way to level your weapons and armor is by doing bounties. As others have pointed out it's best to get some vendor gear. It takes a while but with some effort you'll have enough marks as both vanguard and crucible vendors. I wouldn't buy the boot though since raid boots offer extra heavy ammo so focus on the other pieces first.

Vendors in the tower sell legendary armor for different currencies (up to level 31). Unique raid armor can be acquired in the raids (up to level 30 from VOG & up to level 32 from CE). NOTE: you can also acquire and equip one piece of exotic armor which tend to have high light levels.

PvE leveling up. Don't wait for lucky drops, that's bound for disappointed. Buying Vanguard gear will get you to lvl 31. The max marks you can earn in a week is 100 which you can get from 30 public events (use the public events tracker on the Web). 3 weeks and you've got it.

Grind tiger strikes and do heaps of vanguard bounties to rank up, then you can buy gear :)

Try going to eBay and buy an expansion pass then sell the game with the expansion pass and hype it up to make the sale.

Do the strike play list that's closest to your level (tiger at 24, I think), or the one below that if you're not that great of a player. Max out your 10 crucible marks for the week, and buy gear from the vendor. Max out your Crucible marks for the week if you like Crucible, and buy different gear. Once you hit level 26+, the VoG. Repeat next week. Once you hit 30+, do VoG hard, and Crota.
