HOW TO INCREASE LIGHT
ATTENTION NEW MEMBER WITH LIGHT LEVEL UNDER 260, the easiest way to get new gear to rank to light level 260 is to grind the vanguard strikes this will give guaranteed blue gear at the end of the strike. Once you are comfortably over 260 light now you can grind the heroic strikes for gear that will take your light up to 290. The trick is to save your engrams the higher light level you are. The engrams will change the armor upgrade as you level up so save them till you are the highest possible level and then turn them in to the cryptarch. There are also 3 quests which you can complete to get level 300 gear. One is Court of Oryx, another is the vanguard strikes (few normal and 5 heroic), and then There's HIGH-VALUE TARGETS. Not sure who gives it to you, I am also a warlock.

Also just remember this game is a grind so don't be in a rush to lvl up it will happen naturally
