Wanted to try writing for a viddya game, so figured I'd start with a challenge: write a satisfying end to the Mass Effect series.
Ground Rules
I'm only going to rewrite the last mission, Priority: Earth. There's lots I would change in the series, but to keep things manageable I'm focusing just on this one part.
DLC or multiplayer should not be required to obtain any of the endings.
I'm assuming I have an unlimited budget for cutscenes, voice acting etc.
Key Concepts
Here's my philosophy for the rewrite. If you disagree with this, you'll hate the rewrite, so there's probably little point in reading further.
(1) Player choice
The point will be to have key decisions in the series directly impact the ending (not indirectly via EMS). Each ending should leave the galaxy in a fundamentally different situation.
(2) Squaddies
Shep's relationships with his team mates is absolutely central to ME. You're not fighting for the universe, you're fighting for them. So all (surviving) team members from previous games will be directly involved in the finale.
(3) Endings
In addition to being unique, the possible endings should allow the player to reflect their play style, creating an ending that suits their particular Shepard. From most Paragon to most Renegade, the possible endings will be:
Peace: Shepard does a Jean Luc Picard. With the Reapers in the ropes and his finger on the Crucible fire button, he opts to talk to them instead, convinces them to see they are wrong, and to protect the Galaxy rather than destroy it.
Destruction A (Alliance): Shepard fires the Crucible and destroys the Reapers. An alliance of races establishes peace throughout the galaxy.
Flight: Shepard realizes the Reapers can't be defeated, and chooses to flee in the hopes of helping future cycles overcome the Reapers.
Self-sacrifice: The Reapers damage the Crucible. Normal firing is impossible. Shepard sends his team away, then sacrifices himself to activate it and destroy the Reapers.
Mutual annihilation: The Reapers damage the Crucible. Normal firing is impossible. Shepard deliberately self-destructs the Crucible, destroying the galaxy's relay network, killing every major sentient race, but also wiping out the Reapers.
Destruction B (Conquest): Shepard fires the Crucible and destroys the Reapers. Humanity becomes the dominant race.
Control: Shepard sides with TIM/Cerberus, and helps them to take control of the Reapers. Cerberus uses them to enslave the galaxy.
Edited by TwoGz: 9/4/2015 11:59:43 AMMission Outline: Situation The Citadel has been captured by the Reapers and moved to Earth orbit. The allied fleet has assembled for the final battle. Shepard is reunited with all his old teammates on the Normandy. The Objective Board the Citadel and enable the Crucible to dock. Fire the Crucible and destroy the Reapers. Plot Outline: [CUTSCENE 1] Fleet jumps into the Sol system and engages the Reapers. The Normandy punches through the Reaper cordon and lands on the Citadel. (Gameplay) Destroy Reaper defenses and enable shuttles to land. Fight through Reaper enemies to the Presidium Tower. [CUTSCENE 2] Arrive at Tower: oddly, Reaper forces around the Tower appear to be fighting each other. (Gameplay) fight through three-way battle among alliance and two Reaper factions. Reach inside the tower. [CUTSCENE 3] Confronted by TIM inside the Tower. He is subverting the indoctrination signal and using it to control the Reapers. If Shepard kept the Collector base in ME2, he will try to win Shepard to his cause. Otherwise, he will be hostile. Shepard either kills or joins TIM, then opens the Citadel for the Crucible to dock. Reapers react by trying to shoot down the Crucible. The outcome depends on whether Shepard brokered peace with the Quarians and Geth or not. Reaper forces begin landing on the Citadel in a counterattack. (Gameplay) Defend the Tower against waves of Reaper forces. [CUTSCENE 4] A Reaper Destroyer arrives and begins firing on the Tower. The outcome depends on whether the Krogan genophage was cured, and whether the Rachni Queen was spared. (Gameplay) Take out the Destroyer. [CUTSCENE 5] The Crucible docks. Shepard races to the controls. Harbinger contacts Shepard, threatens and blusters. Shepard makes his/her choice. Appropriate ending cutscene and epilogue. Fini.
