For my first vault of glass (over 200 completions ago!) I had a friend who knew what he was doing and guided us through.
That very same fireteam went through crota months later and we vowed to each other to not research ANYTHING prior to crota. That was by far the best experience I've ever had in the raids. The night crota dropped it took us almost 9 hours to finish the whole thing (keep in mind this is back when we were level 30 and 3 levels weaker than all enemies, trust me being level 30 sword bearer against a 33 crota is NOT fun).
The crota engagement alone took us hours, and xbox live was actually forcing updates on the 360, so one by one we were being disconnected and being forced to restart due to oversoul. Finally our chance came with me being host and a friend quickly levelling to 31 to be our sword master. Final down came for crota after ogres, and low and behold it's my turn to get disconnected for the update RIGHT when crota goes to his knees. I quickly texted my fire team and let them know what happened and they were replying with "get back on now! Crota is glitched!"
I quickly returned back (though not in time) and found my fireteam actually waited for me out of loyalty and missed the opportunity to kill him. An hour or so later we killed him.
We actually claim to be the FIRST fire team to discover the lag out glitch to kill crota but we decided not to ruin it or post it and left it to others to discover. But I firmly think we were the first to find that glitch ( maybe 7 hours after the normal crota launched).
Anyways moral of the story, find a group of good gaming friends who are skilled and play the raid with them with ZERO research and you will have both a ton of fun, and develop strong relationships with those gamers if you don't already.
