What it solves is the issues of porn spammers and people who don't give a crap about other people, because no matter what kind of crap they spew, they could just make another alt. This forces people to either be decent, or not be able to participate in the community. If older members really want to still be able to post here, they can download the demo and make a character. But this is the right decision. This is for the "greater good."
