What it solves is the issues of porn spammers and people who don't give a crap about other people, because no matter what kind of crap they spew, they could just make another alt.
They still can. Sure, it'll take a few minutes longer, but I imagine a lot of people will take this as a challenge. From the look of your profile, you've been here around the same amount of time as I have. Remember pre-Destiny Bungie? Remember the mods and their iron fist? You had to be somewhat respectable then. Even trolls had to play it smart. Certainly not now. This place is a shell of its former self.
If older members really want to still be able to post here, they can download the demo and make a character.
What's stopping a troll from doing the same? Will Bungie's next step to then make the demo irrelevant and force people to pay for Destiny in order to access the mains? What then? Will you have this same stance when we have to pay for a full-price game just to post here?
But this is the right decision. This is for the "greater good."
Sure, this is for the greater good. Bungie isn't some heartless monster who just want to screw over their old fans for no good reason. Of course I can see where they're coming from here. But this isn't the way. It's like they've forgotten how things used to go around here.

I can't say from experience, anyway.

Oh, okay. Well, you'll just have to take our word for it then. The mods were (well, I'm sure they still are) pretty good people who didn't take no rubbish. There were mistakes every now and then, and people didn't always get along with them, but they did a hell of a job. Now they've essentially been spayed and neutered and can only watch as all they've done over the years is forgotten seemingly without a care by the people that gave them the opportunity in the first place.

Strange. When I was a mod everyone basically told us that we sucked and didn't know how to do our jobs.

It's a cruel fate.
