What restored my faith in humanity was hitchhiking across Australia and the USA. The amount of people that actually picked me up and some even let me crash at their place, gave me food and really helped me out. All types of people picked me up. Teenagers that liked partying, a father with his 5 year old son in the back and even an elderly couple among many others. It showed me that there are still decent human beings in the world.

  • I bet they're happy you didn't slit their throats!

  • Amazing, things like this dont really go around but bad news will travel miles. Glad to hear this.

  • For real? Did you video doc any of it? I've always wanted to do a documentary on random acts of humanity. People who just decide and go for it. Inspirational things, not stupidity if you know what I mean. I'm thinking of putting up a website for people to share their stories and provide video or photos to support them. Of course I'd have to vet each story.

  • No. This was years ago. I took a bunch of photos but I kept my backpack pretty empty. Easier to travel light. Maybe next time. I didn't really have a plan except to travel and live. That trip I was gone for roughly 11 months. Did Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. The last month was hitching from Los Angeles back to New Jersey.

  • You are an inspiration for all of us. Seriously, we all live to die and are dying to live! Yet someone like yourself took a great leap of faith and lived! I would feature this in a documentary in a heartbeat! Very uplifting.

  • There were a few bad times as well but the good times outweighed the bad for sure. If anyone is ever thinking about traveling, do it. Everyone can and should. Even if it seems impossible or scary. The experiences you'll have and people you'll meet will change your life.
