No one really knows, but it does have the effect of creating spacetime in between objects in space. There are multiple hypotheses, including another fundamental force (the others being strong nuclear, electromagnetic, weak nuclear, and gravity), or just gravity behaving differently than Einstein and his successors theorized at very long distances.
