Your first point proves the whole point, the gaming industry is financially bigger than the movie industry.
I've never blindly preordered a movie hoping it was gong to be ok?!? That's why the movies still have to try hard to put out a product with a decent quantity and quality, bad reviews would cripple it and make it a loss (ask Kevin Costner..)
The gaming industry releases enough product to get you interested, then continually tops it up in small, just overpriced but affordable sections. In app purchases and similar products are absolutely fleecing the gaming public in small, hardly noticeable nuggets which add up to a ridiculously large income at the developers end.
They are not struggling in any sense of the word, they could afford to give more and still be turning a massive profit. They just don't need to, people already can't give them money fast enough.
You heard the truest words from the horses mouth, "if we show them something they really(think they) want, they'll throw money at the screen"
He knows.
