They probably don't have a choice. They see the writing on the wall. PvP has died a very slow death since the beginning of Destiny 2. Sure, it's been slightly revived here and there, but mostly in decline. And it's simply because Destiny's version of PvP doesn't and has never worked. And now with the player base getting smaller and smaller, they simply can't afford to fraction it out. Trials will be the worst. They already aren't cracking 200k and lets be real, a lot of that number is account recovs so the actual number is even lower. I never waited so long for solo queue match times this season for Gambit. Some days I just went in the larger pool just to get my matches over with quicker. Crucible is basically turning into a mode where you either play in a team or just start to ignore it. If they ever do away with power level that and Gambit will be ghost towns.

I disagree that Destiny PvP “doesn’t and has never worked.” I think the biggest problem is that Bungie ACTIVELY NEGLECTED PvP for 3+ years, where pretty much all they did was tinker with weapon performance. No new maps, no new game modes, no new anything. That has allowed PvP to degrade to the point that is has currently reached, where they spent literally years saying they had a “renewed focus on PvP” before they actually allocated resources to this “renewed focus” (i.e. the last few months).
