The Difficulty Spike Has Killed D2 For Me

When I heard the plan to "bring the challenge back," I was cautious, but remained hopeful. I'm someone who plays games to relax and unwind after a hard day at work. Put on a podcast or a classic MST3K in the background, and just chill. Run some patrols, complete some bounties, bang out a seasonal activity or a strike, maybe even grab a Nightfall here and there. Maybe it's me, but I don't understand the mentality of those who feel an almost masochistic sense that a game should absolutely wreck them. Dying sucks, losing sucks, and punishing difficulty just feels like a chore. I don't feel a sense of triumph when I overcome an obscenely difficult game, I feel like I've just finished a painful medical procedure (which isn't entirely fair; the medical procedure will at least accomplish something). During Season of the Seraph, I soloed my first exotic mission, complete the Wish Ender exotic quest (yes, it sat in my quest log since Forsaken), and got the catalysts for half a dozen weapons. I felt triumphant. I looked forward to each daily reset and accomplishing so much more. Now, I feel a sense of dread just looking at the game. I saw the wipe screen more times than ever during my initial playthrough of the campaign. I can't run the exotic mission without help, and the one time I tried it on legendary was a massacre (my Fireteam mates abandoned me at the first encounter when they saw how far south things were going). The Nightfalls are brutal, and the weapon drop rates are pathetic. I go to Neomuna maybe 2 or 3 times a week, because I just end up dying so frequently. I want to complete the Legendary Campaign so I can get some cool loot, but Calus killed me at least a dozen times on normal, and I can only imagine how brutal he'll be this time around. I get that there are people out there who want to be challenged, but they had Raids, Grandmaster Nightfalls, Trials of Osiris, etc. Did they really need more? And for the community, here's a fun drinking game: take a shot for every reply to this post that falls under the 'git gud' meme.

I only half agree with you, and here's why: The difficulty increases were requested by, and are liked by, top end players. The kind of players who love to play GMs and master raids. The game was far too easy and honestly for many players it still is, just slightly less so. These changes needed to happen. However, the place where Bungie missed the mark on difficulty is in the base content. Normal campaign, patrol zones, normal strikes, basically anything that doesn't have a "legendary" or higher modifier next to the name..... Should not have been touched. That's where your new lights and less able guardians play, and they absolutely did not ask for and clearly did not appreciate the difficulty increase. Not to mention, the players that DO like it hard are unlikely to spend any significant amount of time in these activities. Now that these points are said, it's time to tackle the big disconnect that indeed many people having, and while im sure it's likely to ruffle some feathers, it is the bitter truth: If you are struggling so bad in legend or higher content that the game is unfun, that content was NOT designed for you. If you want to play on that difficulty setting then the onus should be on you to improve and not the game to be nerfed. Let's also keep in mind, that harder content is all the same as normal content, just harder. You can experience the same content at normal difficulty. Going higher SHOULD get harder, and have better rewards as incentive. Destiny does this, as does many very popular games on the market, and that's ok. Tldr: revert normal content, keep legend+ as is.
