I assume the sudden mobilisation of the Pyramid Fleet relates to Crow ending up in the Pale Heart.
The Witness is busy attempting to forge a connection with the Light, notices a Guardian has somehow managed to follow it and decides to split its focus and destroy the Guardians before we replicate this feat and flood into the Pale Heart to try and stop it.

I believe you are 100% spot on. I stated this in another reply earlier too: my only wonder with that is why the Witness wouldn’t just go ahead and kill the Crow (very easy feat for the Witness) and end the possibility of us going through. Maybe the Crow is somehow hidden in there, or maybe the Crow isn’t in the Pale Heart just yet but is still on his way through the portal? I completely agree that this seems to be a knee jerk reaction in panic by the Witness, and now it’s officially going down in the Last City.

Given Cayde’s appearance and the fact that the Witness hasn’t won yet, I’d say the Traveler is running interference.
