Well, I have two thoughts for this. One, I'd join as soon as I thought a draft was imminent. Drafts are used to fill enlisted ranks, typically infantry, and typically because they're getting killed. I'm too smart for infantry. College degree in engineering, demonstrated leadership skills. I'm not going to take a risk of being handed a rifle and shoved to the front lines. Second, I think mandatory civil service would do our country well. Could be military, engineer corps, peace corps, or some new area.
