I think the question he was going for was: if you know a man has the potential and desire to kill, why wouldnt you kill him? (This disregards the notion of taking prisoner, etc, due to the nature of the situation, which is immediate)

For example, I have the potential, and desire to kill a few people, but I never will. I will not follow through, unless my life is in mortal danger. Only when my life, or the lives of others are in immediate mortal danger, do I think it's reasonable to use equal force.
